Tyco Integrated Systems have supplied a variety of surveillance solutions to the UK's universities. These include the prestigious Cambridge University, where some 12 separate sites are networked together using the latest IP CCTV technology.
The Control System
The IP Control system for the CCTV is based on Tyco's latest Mosaic solution which has allowed the existing analogue CCTV cameras to be seamlessly integrated into the new system using the latest IP technology. This includes Network Video Recording to allow easy archiving and retrieval of the recorded video that can be exported to DVD should the requirement arise.
Also on this system are a number of Help Points, which interface into the system so that when a call is made, the operator can immediately see the Help Point on screen as the system automatically sends the nearest camera into a preset shot covering the location. With both Audio and Video, the operator can then quickly assess the situation and call for additional resources as required.
Transmission One of the features of Cambridge University is that it covers a large geographical area and comprises many different sites, some of which are ultra modern such as the futuristic Maths Centre and others the traditional buildings within the city centre. Getting all the pictures and control back from these sites involves a sophisticated network which is part of the Campus IT system. Tyco took care to ensure that the new system integrated onto this system without causing undue load or other interference to the critical operation demands of the University. Key to this success is ensuring that the appropriate encoding technology is used, to minimse bandwidth whilst still giving high quality pictures and minimal latency.
