Introduction
There is a lot of hype surrounding the use of thermal imaging cameras within the security and surveillance industry. It seems to be that the product is ready before the industry. In some ways this is a good thing as all too often we have products that are not ready coming on to the market, but we need to work out if we need thermal imaging or are the thermal imaging manufacturers trying to create a demand for a product that is not required?
Thermal imaging cameras are not a new product. They date back to the 1950’s although this was limited to military use due to the expense and the use in sensitive military applications. The question to ask is why are the cameras now available for non military applications? The answer is simply that with technology advances the price point has come down and it is now at a point where the cost benefit analysis stacks up. So what has changed to make this happen? The main technology advance is the use of un-cooled sensors which allow for smaller and less expensive camera housings and considerably lower manufacturing costs.
